This paper obtains simple CAD formulas of a microstrip‐line coupler in even and odd modes by synthetic asymptote. The formulas relate the line structure to the even‐ and odd‐mode impedances and the effective dielectric constants. The formulas are simple and accurate, and they provide good physical insights on the design properties. The average errors are less than 2%. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
