We propose a novel method to enhance the bandwidth of plastic optical fiber with a multi‐step core by forming a graded‐index core through thermal diffusion in the performance stage. The numerical simulation results indicate that the bandwidth of the optical fiber can be significantly enhanced by this method. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
