A method is presented for designing and fabricating broadband and arbitrary profile filters using large chirped fiber grating. The relationship between grating reflectivity and chirp coefficient is discussed. By changing the ultraviolet (UV) light exposure dose along the grating, the complex refractive index modulation profile can be obtained. A broadband filter used for sensing with a linear reflectivity profile is produced through this method. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
