Abstract This paper presents some aspects concerning the use of composite materials for manufacturing microstrip antenna arrays, along with key problems related to the incorporation of such materials into antenna design. As an example, an integrated microstrip antenna array with electrically down‐tilted beam for the GSM900 system is described. The applicability of composite materials technology has been proven by mechanical strength test and electrical parameter measurement results, which are also briefly reported herein. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
