A novel dual‐band single‐layer patch antenna that covers the bands of 890–960 MHz for GSM and 1710–1880 MHz for DCS, with VSWR ⩽ 2:1, is presented. This antenna consists of a ground plane, air spacing (without dielectric substrate), and a metal patch layer printed on a thin substrate with lower permittivity. The performances simulated by using Ansoft Ensemble 8.0 software are bandwidth for the GSM band (9.22%) and 730 MHz for DCS band (40.56%). The simulated and experimental results are compared. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 38: 195–198, 2003; Published online in Wiley InterScience (www.interscience.wiley.com).
