A method to synthesize the parameters of a folded waveguide traveling‐wave tube (FWTWT) is derived. For the device designed using this method, cold characteristics such as phase velocity and interaction impedance of virtual TM wave, as well as the growth rate, show reasonable agreement with those obtained by HFSS and MAGIC3D particle‐in‐cell (PIC) simulation, respectively. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
