A wide‐angle finite‐difference beam propagation method for the solution of coupled nonlinear wave equations is introduced in this paper. The formalism is expanded in terms of Padé approximants for the Crank–Nicolson scheme. An iterative algorithm is utilized to optimize convergence in the nonlinear region. The overall performance of the method is checked for a nonlinear X‐coupler. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
