An innovative dual‐frequency planar inverted‐F antenna (PIFA) mounted at the bottom end of the ground plane of a folder‐type mobile handset is presented. The proposed PIFA has a bent meandered radiating arm and is first printed on a flexible printed circuit board (FPCB), which is then bent by 90° and attached to and supported by a foam base of size 40 × 8 × 7 mm 3 . The proposed PIFA is capable of GSM/DCS operation, and the experimental results of a constructed prototype are presented and discussed. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
