A novel close approximation of a layer surrounding the scatterer which does not reflect outgoing waves is proposed. The layer consists of cells. Inside each cell, the scattered field is expended in terms of waves propagating from the sides of the cell, except the outer one. The realizability and appropriateness of the construction are checked by solving the scattering from circular and square conducting cylinders. The approach has the advantage of simplicity and provides sufficiently accurate results in a wide range of frequencies. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
