A novel leaky‐wave antenna based on an NRD guide which not only possesses the merit of easy manufacture but also overcomes the difficulty of fixing the dielectric slab in the guide precisely, is proposed in this paper. Another attractive feature of this antenna is that the leakage and propagation constant can be separately controlled by means of choosing different geometric parameters. Thus it becomes possible to control the beam angle and the beamwidth of the antenna independently. Extensive numerical results are given to establish useful guidelines for the design of the new antenna. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
