This paper presents a formally exact mode‐matching analysis of scattering by a side‐rounded rectangular iris in rectangular waveguides. The complete set of modes in a rectangular waveguide with rounded sides is used in the mode‐matching formulation for the junction between a small side‐rounded rectangular waveguide and a large rectangular waveguide, based on the plane wave series expansion of Bessel function. Numerical results for the scattering parameters of a rectangular waveguide loaded with a side‐rounded rectangular iris are presented and compared with measurements. Excellent agreement is observed in all the cases considered. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
