Abstract Large gain enhancement in a novel long‐wavelength band (L‐band) erbium‐doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) is demonstrated by the cascade of pumped and unpumped erbium‐doped fibers. By utilizing an injected conventional wavelength band (C‐band) laser as an auxiliary pump signal, an approximately 7.5‐dB gain improvement is achieved. The EDFA performances are analyzed and explained in terms of C‐band wavelength, and pumped and unpumped erbium‐doped fiber sequence. The results indicate that there is a tradeoff between gain enhancement and noise figure reduction. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
