A novel reflection L‐band erbium‐doped fiber amplifier, based on a fiber loop mirror, is constructed. This amplifier reflects the backward ASE to the EDF as a secondary pumping source. A gain of 30 dB (an increase of 6 dB) is obtained, compared to the forward‐end‐pumped EDFA in the range of 1570–1603 nm. The saturated output power was 7.63 dBm and 7.6 dBm for 1580 nm and 1600 nm signals, with increases of 2.98 dB and 3 dB, respectively, compared to the forward end‐pumped EDFA. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
