In this paper, microstrip photonic bandgap structures based on etching a nonperiodic pattern of circles in the ground plane of a microstrip line are investigated. Three topologies based on placing two defects in a periodic circle pattern, with a different spacing between them for each structure, are considered and their responses are compared. Multiple‐frequency and bandwidth‐tuned bandgaps are obtained. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
