A new compact generalized formula of the impulse response of a synthetic aperture system in the frequency domain is presented. This expression affords an improvement of chirped radar and sonar imaging techniques in wide‐band high‐resolution configurations. A new accurate and efficient chirp‐scaling algorithm has been reformulated by including an n th ‐order expansion. This new algorithm has been implemented and tested, yielding more accurate images than the conventional CSA. © 2003 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
