A fundamental relation S min 2 + S ± 2 =1 between output light polarization magnitudes with linear light incidence and circular light incidence is found to exist universally in single‐mode optical fibers. It is confirmed theoretically and experimentally, and is employed to analyze the SOP‐maintaining capability of a fiber. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 29: 16–19, 2001.
