A state‐of‐the‐art multi‐octave band‐printed circuit log‐periodic antenna (LPA), which can characterize signal polarization accurately, has been designed and developed. A broadband compact‐size cylindrical cavity has been developed for the LPA. The feeding mechanism for the cavity‐backed structure was implemented using a Chebyshev‐tapered printed circuit balun. The antenna can be flush‐mounted with the platform surface and hence finds wide application in electronic warfare (EW) systems. The technique involved in the development of this antenna and its feeding mechanism along with the measurement results are presented. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
