A novel linearization method is proposed to increase the dynamic range of an electro‐absorption modulator in suboctave bandwidth operation by exploiting the fact that the phase of third‐order intermodulation distortion varies with the dc bias voltage. A reduction of 14 dB in IMD3 and a subsequent increase of the linear dynamic range were experimentally obtained. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 29: 2–5, 2001.
