A flexible search technique based on a tabu search algorithm is presented for the shaped‐beam pattern synthesis of linear antenna arrays. To synthesize a desired pattern, element excitations and/or positions are optimally determined. Examples of cosecant, flat‐topped, and pencil beam patterns are given to illustrate the achievable performance. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
