An aperture‐coupled patch antenna with a cross slot for compact dual‐polarized operation in the 1800 MHz band (1710–1880 MHz) suitable for applications in a personal communication system (PCS) is presented. For operation in the 1800 MHz band, the proposed antenna has a square patch of dimensions 50×50 mm 2 , which is only about 0.69 times that of the conventional design using a simple square patch. With the antenna size reduction achieved, good dual‐polarized performances have also been obtained for the proposed antenna. Excellent port decoupling (less than −37.3 dB) across the entire operating bandwidth is obtained, and good cross‐polarization levels (about 20 dB) for both linear polarizations with an antenna gain level of about 7.0 dBi are observed. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
