The relationship between the resonance frequency of an antenna and the phase of its radiated field is established, indicating that the frequency or dimensional tuning may be used for beam scanning of the arrays. For microstrip patch antennas the range of far field phase variation within the element bandwidth is determined. Examples for limited beam scans of four element arrays are considered and studied. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
