This paper presents an improved formula for the fundamental TM‐mode cutoff wavenumber of an arbitrary waveguide based on two independent isoperimetric inequalities and the introduction of a new global integral geometry quantity p . A lot of classic examples show its accuracy and validity for computer‐aided design (CAD). The maximum relative error is less than 1% in most cases and less than 2% even for extreme cases. Note that the mathematical techniques employed here are elementary. Some basic observations about the method are discussed. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
