We propose a new and efficient method to optimize the output gain profile based on the characteristics of a WDM pumped Raman gain spectra and the fact that different wavelength pumps have different impacts on the gain tilt. As an application, we optimize a 10 wavelength pumped fiber Raman amplifier in a short time, and a 80 nm flat gain band with less than 0.4 dB ripple has been derived. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
