In this paper, we present the results of measuring the near‐field and radiation patterns of a novel leaky‐wave antenna. Although the first higher order mode in the antenna can be successfully excited in a wide frequency band, the leaky‐wave radiation is limited to a relatively narrow frequency band of about 1.8 GHz. Outside this band, the antenna radiates as a phased array of local oscillators and demonstrates a multi‐beam radiation pattern. Investigations of modified antenna design have revealed new opportunities to improve antenna characteristics by changing the width and location of the impedance transformer, as well as by inserting electrical dipoles at the fixed locations of standing waves formed along the radiating microstrip line. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
