Microwave characteristics of traveling‐wave photodetectors (TWPD) calculated with the use of the finite‐difference–time‐domain (FDTD) method are presented. When a TWPD is long for high‐power operation, microwave loss affects the bandwidth. This article presents a design guide for microwave characteristics for long TWPDs. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
