A novel EBG structure is proposed for a tunable and wide stop band (band gap). Although the proposed EBG, which consists of two microstrip open‐loop resonators located back to back, has only one unit cell inserted into the microstrip; it produces the characteristics of the general EBG structure, that is, slow wave and wide band gap. Simulations and measurements have shown that the stop‐band center frequency and the bandwidth of stop band depend on the widths of strips of the proposed EBG. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
