Based on comparing the analyzing methods in existence for multipath interference (MPI) resulted from Rayleigh backscattering in distributed fiber Raman amplifiers (DFRA), two novel methods are presented. A simple analytical expression is developed in the first method. The evolution of optical powers within each step is calculated by a semianalytical method in the second so that the MPI calculating time can be saved and the precision can be improved. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
