A diffraction problem is solved for a plane E‐ or H‐polarized wave incident on a chiral layer placed over a reflecting grating of rectangular grooves cut in a perfectly conducting metal plane. The approach uses decomposition and generalized scattering matrix methods. The phenomenon of quasi‐complete cross‐polarization conversion of waves with large telescopicity coefficient is shown. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
