By placing a rectangular spiral conducting strip on the top, bottom, and two side surfaces of a rectangular plastic chip of dimensions 5 × 10 × 16 mm 3 , a novel plastic chip antenna capable of GSM/DCS dual‐band operations in mobile phones is presented. The plastic chip antenna has the attractive feature of surface mountable and generates a lower mode for GSM (890–960 MHz) operation and an upper mode for DCS (1710–1880 MHz) operation. Good antenna performances are also observed. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 33: 330–332, 2002; Published online in Wiley InterScience (www.interscience.wiley.com).
