The synthesis of array antennas mounted over aircraft, ships, or any other complex platform is performed here. Both electromagnetic coupling with the platform and mutual coupling between the array elements are considered by using a hybrid method‐of‐moments physical‐optics formulation. The proposed method consists of an iterative procedure that leads to the array excitation coefficients that optimize the array antenna over the platform. The computational efficiency of the proposed algorithm allows enhancing its scope of application to real problems without being constrained about the electrical size of the problem. Some results are presented to demonstrate the complexity of the problems and the high‐performance radiation patterns that can be achieved. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
