The transmission matrix, or ABCD matrix, is a very useful tool for studying the chain connection of 2n‐port networks. Such a matrix is known to play a crucial role in the determination of the wave propagation parameters of cascaded transmission‐line structures and cascaded optical structures. The general properties of the ABCD matrix are established in this article. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
