Based on the reciprocity theorem, the light scattering from a spherical particle above a slightly dielectric rough surface is studied. The theoretical formulation that accounts for the near‐field interaction between a spherical particle and a rough surface is given, the analytical solution of the scattering cross section for the composite model is presented, and the backscattering cross sections are calculated and discussed in detail. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
