A new multimode‐fiber‐based microdisplacement sensor using a diffraction grating component is proposed. An analytical model is presented for the proposed technique. The performance of the proposed technique is verified via computer simulation and experimentation. The experimental results agree quite well with the theoretical model. © 2002 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
