We discuss a general method for calculations of scattering matrices of coupled waveguiding structures using group theory. As an example, we present the calculated matrices for a structure consisting of two circular coupled waveguides with different symmetries and with coupling elements of different natures. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
