In this work, a coupled nonlinear equation is derived to describe the optical pulse propagation along a twin‐core fiber in the presence of birefringence. The properties of the equation obtained and the effects of randomly varying birefringence on soliton transmission and soliton switching in a twin‐core fiber are also discussed. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
