A new broadband probe‐fed patch antenna is proposed. We demonstrate that, by feeding an air–substrate patch antenna at the patch edge using a probe feed coplanar with the radiating patch, broadband operation can easily be obtained. Also, for the use of the proposed coplanar probe‐feed design, the ground plane of the patch antenna is transformed into an L‐shape. Experimental results of the constructed prototype showed that the obtained impedance bandwidth (1 : 1.5 VSWR) could be greater than 10% centered at about 1.8 GHz, which makes it suitable for DCS base‐station antenna application. Good radiation characteristics for operating frequencies within the impedance bandwidth have also been observed. Details of the experimental results are presented and discussed. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Microwave Opt Technol Lett 31: 287–289, 2001.
