Abstract This paper presents a study into the parameter‐retrieval methods of metasurfaces composed of isolated metallic unit‐cells. The classical method based on the effective‐medium theory is revisited by aiming at the point of effective thickness in use. The second method based on the generalized sheet transition conditions is also investigated and the extracted results are mutually verified with the classical method when the unity thickness is used. It is found that these two sets of effective parameters, surface susceptibilities and unity effective parameters , are mutually equivalent if they are not equal. The retrieved values are justified by those results available in literature.
