A circular waveguide TM 01 to TE 11 mode converter with very compact shape and high efficiency is proposed in this paper. The design consists of a circular waveguide with a horizontal metallic plate partition and multiple tuning screws. The mode converter is designed and simulated in CST Microwave Studio and maximum conversion efficiency 99% is achieved at an operating frequency of 3.1 GHz. The converter also exhibits frequency tuning by varying the height of screws. The mode converter is fabricated and experiments are performed to measure the input reflection coefficient. A good agreement is found between simulation and experimental results of the reflection coefficient and mode conversion efficiency. The mode conversion is also verified by measuring the far field radiation pattern. The proposed mode converter has the advantages of symmetric, compact, linear (aligned ports) structure, and frequency tuning ability. It can be used in S‐band high power microwave systems, where compact shape and frequency tunability of mode converter is required.
