ABSTRACT The improved nonlinear least‐square method is introduced into the synthesis of subarrayed planar array. This method changes the traditional least‐square method's shortness of being sensitive to its initial conditions. The whole antenna aperture is divided into several subarrays and the excitation amplitude of each subarray is optimized. This can reduce the cost and complexity of the antenna array through common use of components or mass production of identical subarrays. Some numerical experiments are provided to show the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2014 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J RF and Microwave CAE 25:56–65, 2015.
