A new technique has been proposed for designing high‐impedance surfaces (HIS) based on fullwave simulation and the optimization of the unit cell by a particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm. The effectiveness of the design approach is demonstrated by an example of the conventional mushroom structure with a simultaneous artificial magnetic conductor (AMC) and electromagnetic band gap (EBG) properties at the required frequency. Computer simulations are verified via measurements. © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J RF and Microwave CAE 22:541–544, 2012.
