This article presents a modal based analysis technique to excite TM 01 mode in circular waveguide from a rectangular waveguide propagating the dominant TE 10 mode. This mode transducer includes rectangular waveguide to coaxial line transition through a door‐knob probe and coaxial to circular waveguide transition. Modal analysis has been carried out considering oversized circular waveguide supporting higher‐order modes like TE 21, TE 01 , and TM 11 modes apart from the desired mode TM 01 . Simulated and experimental data are presented. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J RF and Microwave CAE, 2010.
