Scanning spherical lens antennas are typically constructed using concentric dielectric shells with external primary feed. A cover layer may also be used. A modal expansion method is reported whereby the scattering matrix of this structure is derived and which accounts for both internal and external dielectric layers. This allows for the radome to be designed in an integrated fashion. Measured radiation patterns for a 35‐dBi antenna are reported for 28 GHz. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
