A class of the matrix equations associated with the “indirect” mode‐matching technique used to solve noncoordinate 2D problems is discussed. Total inapplicability of such equations for direct numerical calculations is proven analytically by comparison with the analytical solution. The impossibility to choose a mode of matrix truncation able to provide the stable solution is demonstrated by the numerical examples as well. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
