A new technique is presented for the extraction of accurate equivalent circuits from 3D structures using a commercial finite‐element software package. The technique is based on first electromagnetic principles; it exploits the post‐processing capabilities of the software and is suitable for analysing structures of arbitrary geometry and materials. Application of this technique reduces a three‐pole monoblock ceramic GSM filter to its equivalent circuit. © 2005 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Int J RF and Microwave CAE, 2005.
