The spectral parameter power series method is applied to problems of underwater sound propagation in the stratified ocean. This method is based on representations of solutions of vertical Sturm–Liouville problems of the form of power series with respect to the spectral parameter, and it gives an effective dispersion equation for wave numbers and explicit expressions for the propagating modes.
