We describe a mathematical method for computing the attenuation distribution from Positron emission tomography (PET) data. The method renders possible the correction of PET data for attenuation without a transmission scan. It can be applied if the attenuation distribution is sufficiently simple (abdomen and bead). We give the results for computer‐generated data and for data on patients.
