Hand surgery started in China when Dr. Shuhuan Wang, founder of hand surgery in China, established China's first hand surgery service in Jishuitan Hospital in Beijing, September 1958. Shortly after this, in southern China, a division of hand surgery was established at Huashan Hospital, Shanghai, in 1960. Owing to the dedication of generations of hand surgeons, hand surgery has developed and flourished throughout China. Nowadays, more than 60 medical centers and hospitals have hand surgery service, and over 10 of them have an independent hand surgery department. © 2005 Wiley‐Liss, Inc. Microsurgery 25:90–95, 2005.
