The technique for creating a distal, high‐flow aortocaval fistula in rats is described in detail. This reliable, inexpensive model lends itself easily to radiologic study and experimental manipulation and may be useful in studying the histologic and pathologic effects of the detachable balloon technique technique in treating arteriovenous fistulae in humans.
