Black psychiatrists say focus on racial, health equity needed in the field

More than 50 years ago, a group of Black psychiatrists stormed an American Psychiatric Association (APA) meeting demanding racial equity. Recommendations that were subsequently put forth for white psychiatrists to become more aware of how their everyday practices continue to perpetuate institutional white racism in psychiatry went unheeded, according to two prominent Black psychiatrists who say the challenges then still exist today.
