Bazelon Center urges reduction of jail population with MI

Amid the COVID‐19 crisis, the Bazelon Center for Mental Health Law released a statement April 6 urging all jurisdictions to: (1) immediately release a majority of the individuals with mental illness held in jails and (2) take immediate steps to divert from jail the majority of individuals with mental illness who are arrested. Some emergency funding is available to support these efforts, officials stated. In addition, Medicaid funding is available for services, especially in Medicaid expansion states.
